Real Salt Lake: Movsisyan boosts RSL reserves in win
There was the stretch where he was sidelined several games because of injuries. Then came the slump where seemingly any type of shot he created inevitably ended up off frame.
But it is the good moments like Movsisyan enjoyed on Saturday morning that make him feel like he has finally moved beyond those earlier turbulent stages.
He connected on a pair of first-half goals to help the RSL reserve squad take a 4-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids reserves. Those pair of goals moved Movsisyan into a tie with ex-RSL striker Kyle Brown for the reserve division scoring lead.
Getting goals, even in a reserve match, offers a confidence boost, he said.
"A game is a game," Movsisyan said. "It doesn't matter. You still got to show up and score and play. It's always good to get the goals and get your confidence up."
It was actually Clint Mathis who first got the Real offensive engine revved up. Mathis put RSL up 1-0 in the 17th minute when he blasted a free kick over Colorado's three-man wall from 35 yards out.
From there, Movsisyan kept things running smoothly. He dribbled around a defender and punched it in from the middle of the penalty area to make it 2-0 in the 26th minute.
Findley capped off the scoring for RSL in the 42nd minute when he took a pass from David Horst and one-touched it into the goal.
Although RSL enjoyed a field day on offense, its defense made certain that Colorado could get nowhere close to the net. The Rapids were unable to create more than a handful of shots. Of those scoring opportunities, even fewer were close to being on frame.
That scenario was perfectly acceptable for assistant coach Brian Johnson. The last thing Johnson or the rest of the coaching staff wanted to see is RSL's defense taking a vacation — even in a reserve game.
"These reserve games turn into goal fests sometimes, and we wanted to make sure we weren't on the wrong side of that — which we have been in prior games," Johnson said.
