$150 billion stimulus package needed, Pelosi says
Pelosi, a California Democrat, told reporters Wednesday in Denver, Colo., that stimulus legislation is needed to create jobs and address the continuing economic crisis, her spokesman Brendan Daly confirmed.
"What we can't wait for is a stimulus package," Pelosi said in remarks confirmed by Daly. "We may have to go back into session before the next Congress."
The House approved a $56 billion stimulus package last month that expanded unemployment assistance, food stamps, highway and other infrastructure spending and aid to state governments. That measure was blocked by Republicans in the Senate, before both chambers adjourned last week at least until the election.
Pelosi said a new stimulus package would also include infrastructure spending and extended unemployment benefits, in comments reported earlier by the Associated Press.
The Bush administration had threatened to veto the stimulus measure the House passed, saying it would "simply increase government spending" without providing an "efficient vehicle for job creation."
