High school football: Felt's Facts Week 8
So far, a dozen teams have clinched playoff berths. But those 12 qualified before the season even began: all Class 2A squads have automatic berths.
In other regions, several schools have clinched at least a tie for a playoff spot and no teams have been eliminated.
Here's a region-by-region look with the number of berths and teams in parenthesis.
Class 5A
Region 1 (5 of 8 teams go to state): Layton has clinched at least a tie and is in the playoffs with a victory over Syracuse. Clearfield is eliminated if it loses to Northridge and Davis beats Fremont.
Region 2 (4 of 6): If favored Alta, Jordan and Skyline win this weekend, they'll all clinch at least a tie for a playoff spot.
Region 3 (4 of 6): The Bingham-Riverton winner will clinch at least a tie for a berth.
Region 4 (3 of 6): The Pleasant Grove-Spanish Fork winner will also.
Class 4A
Region 6 (5 of 8): The winner of Cottonwood and East will secure a berth; both have clinched at least a tie.
Region 7 (5 of 7): Timpview and Springville have clinched at least a tie for a berth and each can claim a playoff spot with a win over Orem and Provo, respectively.
Region 9 (2 of 3): None have clinched anything yet.
Class 3A
Region 8 (5 of 6): Delta and Juan Diego have clinched at least a tie and each is in the playoffs with a victory over Emery and North Sanpete, respectively. Delta is looking to make the state tournament for its on-going state record 34th consecutive year. The Carbon-Salem Hills matchup is the last one between winless teams this season, and the loser is eliminated only if both Emery and North Sanpete pull off upsets this weekend.
Region 9 (3 of 4): None have clinched anything yet.
Region 10 (4 of 5): Ditto
Region 11 (4 of 6): The Logan-Morgan winner is guaranteed a berth and the loser will clinch at least a tie if Ben Lomond beats Grantsville and Bear River defeats Ogden. Otherwise the winner clinches at least a tie.
Class 2A: All are in! Seeding to be determined.
Class 1A: None of the teams have clinched anything yet.
WINNING SEASONS: Cottonwood is 7-0 for the first time ever in its 39-year history. Delta, also 7-0, is off to its best year since a 9-0 start in 1994. Timpview, at 6-0, is assured of its 19th consecutive winning season (1990-2008).
TURNAROUNDS: At this point, Uintah is the most improved team record-wise over last year (from 1-9 to 5-2) followed by Hurricane (3-8 to 6-1) and Springville (2-9 to 5-2).
