Snowboarding is precisely what its name implies: riding a board on snow. It's a relatively new sport that combines elements of skiing, skateboarding and even surfing. In fact, early snowboards were once known as "snurfers," a combination of the words "snow" and "surfer."

U.S. snowboard team produces dramatic contest
The ride to the 2002 Winter Games began Sunday for the U.S. snowboard freestyle team after a dramatic halfpipe contest that brought cheers, tears and perhaps a glimpse of big things to come.

Snowboarders battle their outlaw image
Snowboarding has a brief Olympic history, most of which revolves around whether its first gold medalist did or didn't inhale. Canadian Ross Rebagliati testing positive for marijuana overshadowed his giant slalom victory in Nagano four years ago and added to the outlaw image snowboarders rode into the 1998 Winter Games.
