My heart goes out to the family and friends of Craig Decker. Loosing a loved one is never an easy thing. I am glad they were able to recover the body so they may lay him to rest

Does anyone know what happened. Was he trapped by weeds and there fore unable to come up, or did his body give out once he made the dive?

Very VERY sorry for the loss of a BRAVE, STRONG, SMART, DETERMINED YOUNG MAN who suffered a terrible injury but this hero moved right on, being positive and being an inspiration to others. God be with his family. He is in heaven now, restored to perfection.

I'm so sorry about your loss. Craig seemed like such a positive, upbeat person, despite his accident. He is now with our father in heaven. My prayers are with you.

I knew Craig in high school and talked with him on occasion at BYU. We even entered the MTC on the same day and both went to Argentina. He was always wearing a smile. My heart goes out to his family. The world has lost a great person.

Bob, your comment is thoughtless and inconsiderate.

This is a SHOCK to me; I knew Craig from the UAC-Lab on the BYU Campus!! We all met there to do our homework, papers or just a GREAT PLACE to hang out. Craig was a GREAT GUY to whom ever he met with and STILL IS!!
To the Decker Family; Thank You for sharing your Son with US!!
We'll miss his SMILING FACE in the UAC-Lab...Now and Always!!!!

I have been following the story since he went missing. I went to Youtube to see his instruction videos. He is an impressive person. I hope his family knows that people care. I will keep them in my prayers at this sad and difficult time. This article in todays papers sure let's us appreciate the big picture. This life is but a moment. You guys hang in there. His vacancy will be felt and hard even though we understand the plan. God keep you in his loving care at this time of departure and greif.

Does anyone know what happened?
He is missing a hand. That makes swimming a bit more inefficient than it is for people with two hands.

Marie and Lyle and the siblings of Craig,
I am so glad that Craig's body was recovered. My thoughts and prayers have been with the Decker family since this has happened. You've been an example to all of us with your strength and faith. May you find comfort and know there are so many people that care about your family.

It could have been any number of things but I highly doubt it has to do with him being an amputee. He could have broken his neck when diving in immediately causing paralysis and drowning, he could have had a cardiac arrest from the cold of the water. He could have been pulled under by a current or other debri and unable to free himself. He might have lost his sense of direction once under water because of how murky the water was. It probably had nothing to do with his disability and I am grateful that the DN was decent enough to remove the inconsiderate comment made earlier by someone named Bob. My deepest condolences to the Decker family in their time of loss. It's obvious that Craig was a wonderful young man and will be deeply missed.

I have known Craig since he was just a young boy in primary. I never saw him without a smile. He was one of the kids my boys looked up to, and I always appreciated his great example. When he had is accident with his hand I had moved away, and found out when a mutual friend called to tell me the day after it happened. Craig found out that I was very distraught over his loss, and the day he got home from the hospital he called to tell me not to worry. He was cheerful, happy, and very positive about his future and told me I should be too. He was the one injured, and he was consoling me! I know he would do the same now.

We are told to mourn with those who mourn. Though we know where Craig is and pretty much what he will be doing until we all meet again, it doesn't make the separation (for a time) any easier. When you send anyone off on a mission, even though you know they are in the Lord's hands, you still miss their presence - their lively spirit, antics, and everything about them. The love this family shares forms a net so strong that it includes everyone within its hold. please know that our love, thoughts, and prayers are with you all.

Craig is among my best friends in BYU and Wyview Park Apartments. The news shook me right after I heard it. The Deckers family is in my prayer. Craig, as I'm doing this, I know that you're looking at me from Heaven. Hang on Craig, we miss you, we'll all meet again, until then.

I hurt and mourn with the Deckers, but not because "we are told to mourn with those who mourn". It is not an assignment. It is heartfelt empathy because I lost my teenaged son in a similar accident. I only pray you don't have insensitive religious leaders, like I did, who come in telling you that God took your son and that he is "called" to a mission in the next life. That only made it more painful to think that God killed my son. Instead, I found comfort in the Truth: it was an accident. It was not meant to happen. God did not want it to happen. I know it hurts, and it should hurt because you loved him so much. If it didn't hurt, something would be wrong. The pain reminds you how much you loved him and how much you will miss him. The day may come when you miss the pain because it is a remnant of his reality. I hurt for you and with you. I am so sorry this happened.
Thanks | 10:27 p.m. July 8, 2008
Thanks Craig for leading a life that we can all admire. We love you and know that you are continuing the Lord's work on the other side of the vail.

No mother should ever have to bury her child. I did over 27 years ago and still have moments when I feel that empty spot. That feeling comes most often now when I see another mother have to bury her child, even if it is a news story from Iraq. But here is a good family whom I have gotten to know. How sad and deep this loss is.
I know you will press on and forward. You have always sought for ways to serve. A hard as it will be, I hope you will find blessings along the way because you have blessed my life.

Thank you all for your kindness. Many question what happened. Craig stepped into the water to get our oar. The sail was out, but in the wind the boat slipped from him faster than he sould swim back. My wife tried repeatedly to throw a rope to him without success. I brought the boat around and was right on him when gusts pushed us downwind again. He was just off the side of the boat, so I went in after him holding a rope, but the rope was just barely not long enough and the boat was pulling me away. I got on the boat and tried to bring the boat around again, but as we did he slipped under. He had removed his shoes and was doing all he could, but the short wave frequency and wave height were causing difficulty. I'm sure his prosthetic did him no good in the water. I just wanted you to know he and we really tried. Again, thank you ever so much for yout kind words and prayers.
