A gentle push and a mild arch and old cowhide globe hits home!

Ka-ching!

Awesome!

Now lets package Loozer and bb-gun 47, ship 'em south and bring in S.T.A.T. (aka Amare) and go and get a ring for crying-out-loud!

..how much money these boys make..

and to think what could be done in society.
Dray | 3:37 p.m. July 18, 2008
This is awesome, DWILL is the the franchise. Enough of the comments, of "and to think what could be done in society". They get payed to entertain us, the teams make a lot more money than what they pay the players, if you were offered that money you would take it, so enough of the petty jealous attitude. Now if we could only get a power forward that was as committed as DWILL. GO JAZZ
Naive... | 3:45 p.m. July 18, 2008
The comment by 'sad' is so naive. Money can't just be taken out of one profitable enterprise and given to 'society' without impacting the ability of that organization to benefit our society.

The Jazz, as an organization, create jobs and a lot of revenue for Salt lake City. Many of the players take some fo the money that they receive and give it to worthy causes, benefitting our society. We are lucky to have an organization that brings in and values the type of individual who benefits our local society. Many professional sports organizations are not as concerned about the local community as the Jazz, the Bees, and RSL.

Perhaps your time would be better spent figuring out how you can benefit society, instead of worrying about how others choose to use their resources.

Society is totally messed up when it is willing to pay someone that kind of money to run a toy ball up and down a floor adding virtually nothing to society except 50 minutes of totally unimportant diversion. This takes place while FIRE PERSONS, POLICE AND TEACHERS risk or dedicate there lives to occupations that in a lifetime pay them less than what Mr. Williams gets in one month.

Welcome to a capitalistic economy. If you want equality in pay, I'm sure your local communist chapter has space at thier meetings.

I for one am happy for Deron. Go Jazz
Message to Comrade Sad | 4:22 p.m. July 18, 2008
It's called freedom. The only other alternatiave would be for the government to set wages--a catastrophe everywhere and everytime it's been tried in human history. You can bet that a nation in which the government makes those decisions won't have enough wealth to pay even the most talented anything. Remember the Soviet Union?
Choices | 4:40 p.m. July 18, 2008
Why does everyone always have to compare the salaries of professional athletes to those of teachers, firefighters and others who work in our society? We all made choices, and I, as a teacher, do not regret my choice, even though my salary will never approach that of Deron Williams. And, as a short, non-athletic type, becoming an NBA Basketball player was never actually one of my options :-)

I am rewarded in ways that go beyond a paycheck. I'm willing to bet that if I could somehow adjust my teaching style in a way that 20,000 screaming fans would want to watch me teach each day, I could probably get a significant raise. For now, I'll just be satisfied with making a positive impact on my students for the future, while enjoying my summer off and the other intangible benefits of teaching.
OhYea | 5:12 p.m. July 18, 2008
Sad to Sad to Sad. If you think sports salaries are out of wack, what about CEO's that make in 6 months, what Deron will make in a career. And Deron won't have lost double digit figures 3 years in a row and put hundreds of people in the unemployment line. Then we could talk poitics, but enought said. The world is screwed up big time but at least I can see something positive in the NBA, except for the refs.
Good for D-Will | 5:18 p.m. July 18, 2008
He has earned what he is now getting. If think all that money should be spent elsewhere go create value enough to earn it then give it. If you are a sports fan stop watching sports, that is why they get paid so much.

I'm so glad we have D-Will...the future of the Jazz is great with him here! Stay for your whole career Deron!
RE: Choices | 5:21 p.m. July 18, 2008
Finally! A voice with reason.
rvalens2 | 5:30 p.m. July 18, 2008
Why do people post these inane comments about the good that could be done for society with the wages being paid to professional athletes?

Are you suggesting the government step in and take it away from them? I know I wouldn't like it if they did that to me and I doubt that any of you would.

By extension, it seems you are suggesting that players contribute absolutely nothing to society with the monies they are paid?

If you do a little research, you will find that the NBA, the Jazz and many of the players contribute and support many charitable organizations. It's just not published very often because it isn't considered newsworthy.

While I agree that the sums being paid are huge. In a free society it isn't up to the government to decide how much money people make.

my question is how did 1280 break the news first, isnt 1320 the flag. 1280 does a good job. 1320 dropped the ball.
Teacher | 5:50 p.m. July 18, 2008
I'm a teacher and a lot of people, with some training, can do what I do. How many people on this planet, with all the training in the world, could ever do what D-Will does?
BUG | 6:01 p.m. July 18, 2008
Here's to you "Choices," at least you accept what path you chose. It makes me so mad to hear people say "Athletes make to much." Half the people that say those kind of things are just sitting on their couch, wishing they could be Deron Williams. If I could make 70 mill playin ball then why not! You can't tell me if someone told you they would pay you to play whatever it is you love, that you would decline their offer??? Highly doubt it! So stop complaining and get off your @%* and go make YOUR dream come true and let Deron do what he wants with his money. Here's to you DERON, make us proud!!!
DWILL4MVP | 6:11 p.m. July 18, 2008
YAY!!!
Teacher too | 6:33 p.m. July 18, 2008
I personally don't want the responsibility of millions of dollars. You have people showing up saying they are long-lost relatives and people saying they'll kill themselves if you don't pay off their mortgage. Who wants to deal with that? And I mean that seriously.

On the other hand, I also wouldn't want to deal with a 6.5 million dollar beach home in Florida where I could wander around for days and not see all the bathrooms. I wouldn't want people judging me for building a castle next to an LDS temple that is a blatant display of over-indulgence and extravagence.

I think it's important what you do with your money, however much you earn.

(And I agree with the teacher above that DWill has a talent that can't be taught.)
Live Life with no regrets | 7:46 p.m. July 18, 2008
We get in life What we put into it. Choices is right. That why the USA is GREAT. For Freedom. DWill could have sat at the end of the bench his rookie year and take it from Sloan. Instead his passion for the game increased and was willing to learn and expound his skills. DWill deserves every penny. Sure we all blow a wad of cash here and there. But staying in the community where he live is a sign he bee spending some of it here. DWill thanks for you drive and the love of the Game. We are rooting for you where ever you go. Olympics to show the world, then come back and lets WIN a RING. It's been a fun ride the last 2 years.
Entertainers | 8:44 p.m. July 18, 2008
Some of you bloggers need to blog in LA. See if you can get the Hollywood entertainers to give up their money. After all this is just entertainment. Thanks to DWill the jazz will still be fun to watch.
re:Choices -- I Concur | 9:52 p.m. July 18, 2008
I have been teaching for 15 years and I love my job.

I do wish the money was better, but what can you do.

D-Will does things I can't, and I'll bet I do things at my job that D-Will can't.

Bottom line, I work in a socialist model, and he works in a capitalist model.

His paycheck does not make what we do any less important.

I love my job. I love going to work each day. Everyone should be so lucky.
re:Sad | 9:55 p.m. July 18, 2008
Think about what society would be like if everyone worked as hard at their jobs as Deron, entertainers, teachers and police.
