Do you hear that Utah? Shhh. That's right...it's the sound of BYU fans cheering as we beat you year after year. Here comes the pain train!!!!
kitty | 2:13 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Looks like Utah didn't want him....Let byu have him.
Collie Connection | 2:18 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Much to the chagrin of Utah fans, the Collie connection continues at BYU.

Welcome to Cougartown! We love hard workers! It's good to get on the Cougarexpress now because this baby is taking off!
Dick | 2:35 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
another piece of excellent investigative reporting from Dick.
Good Catch | 2:52 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
No pun intended. However, the article is a bit misleading. Scout has him at #53 of all receivers, not all players. Rivals has him somewhere in the 80's for receivers nationally. Overall assessment? Good for him for choosing the Y, but this isn't a big story nationally.
McKay | 2:53 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Watching the kids jr year highlight tape, his play looks very similar to Collie. Could be a great get!
Sweetness | 3:02 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Good Job, Bronco and company. Keep on reloading year after year with quality players who are quality people.
Concast-Hater | 3:06 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Not another family connection for this team. Now Austin Collie and this new recruit will be family.
I'm glad BYU got him, but the family and friends connection is getting too much for me.

This is possibly the worst written article I have ever read. The wording is nothing short of terrible. Have you ever heard of a proof-read?
You ought to feel ashamed D News! Other than that, this is great news for the Cougs.

another quality player | 3:12 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
..has been added to the arsenal. What Bronco and his assistants are doing with recruiting has been pretty amazing. This team is only going to get stronger every year. After a couple more years of BYU dominating the MWC I wouldn't be surprised to see the Big 12 replace a team like Baylor with BYU.
Utes by 5 | 3:55 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Why would the Utes want this kid? We are playing Weber State next year, this will get our foot in the door of almost every high school player in Ogden city.
Detail | 3:56 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
He's listed as the #53 receiver, not the # 53 player on scout.com.
Little Brothers | 3:58 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
I know it's tough for the little brothers who are obsessed with posting snide little comments on every article remotely associated with BYU; just relax. It's not that bad having a big brother.
Dick | 4:12 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Position rank is 53 not overall ranking. Thanks for not knowing the facts Dick ----- AGAIN.
Stinks | 4:39 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Ute fan here, and its too bad that he picked BYU. However, if I were to pick between the schools listed that had interest, I would have picked BYU too. He can't be that great if he was one of the best receivers in California and none of the California schools were looking at him.
To the guy critical of Utah playing Weber (an in state school that was a bone thrown to the coach that got Utah notoriety), I'm sure the game against Norther Iowa will open recruiting doors in Iowa!!!

ute | 4:44 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Relax byu fans! He is a three star recruit not a five star. Both Utah and BYU are loaded with three star recruites.
Mike B. | 5:20 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Ute fans don't go dishing us on this kid. He will be good. Bronco is getting the big physical kids at reciever now, something that BYU has not gotten in the past. Utah has a great one in Aione Keys if he ever makes it into school. I want Utah to be good because it makes are victories over them even sweeter.
r16cobal | 5:26 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Please read through your story before publishing. It is full of grammatical errors that a jr. high'er would catch.
re: ute | 5:29 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
He was a 4 star recruit until he began hinting that he was heading to the Y, then magically he somehow ends up a 3 star..
strange | 5:37 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
I thought Bronco only recruited 8th graders or players who were already on another team.
Good get | 5:44 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Nothing special though. If BYU could some how get Manti T'eo, then I would be pretty scared being a U fan. The kid is an athletic freak and one of the top recruits in the country. Every top program in the country is after him. I think he will end of at USC but watch out if BYU lands him. He would be their best recruit in the last 15 years.
Sherlock | 5:48 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
The next time Harmon does some investigative reporting, he should cast his eyes up at his newspaper's masthead. The name of his paper is NOT the Deseret Morning News. It is the Deseret News.
Nice editing job there, guys! Dick should look at the company name on his paycheck once in a while instead of just cashing it.

The vaunted cougarexpress is probably alot like Amtrak which I took Reno for Christmas one year; it
was delayed 5 hrs. Then took 14 hours to make an 8 hour trip.

You mean all the Handcart memorials aren't enough to pique curiousity in ethanol country?
re: ute | 4:44 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
All the 5 star recruits got to the SEC where real football is played not the watered down, mamby pamby, all hype & no substance MWC version.

"Thompson said Collie's name still comes up at his high school and the football program. "Anytime a point is made about work ethic and how to never take a play off, coaches talk of Austin Collie," said Thompson.
He's a great player and tremendous example on and off the field."
Sounds like Austin is living right on & off the field after all.

mikw | 7:20 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
the reason he was moved from four star to three star is because scout cut the number of four stars in half
BYU MOM | 8:20 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
The only consistency at the U of U, is BYU consistently paddling their little Ute bottoms every year.
Ernest T. Bass | 8:28 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Head-to-head they're 2-4 over the last six seasons, not exactly a reason to brag.
Noticed that byu beat out those throwing powerhouses of NE and AFA. Oh and let's not forget UNLV, who's beaten byu twice in the 2000s in Provo no less.
Wow, another guy who greatest attribute will be that he runs routes very well.
Jealous.

How 'bout them Cougars!
Paul | 8:51 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Actually, it's a 4-4 record over the past eight seasons, and the Utes fall farther behind if you go back 12, 16, 20, 30 years.
Uncle 'Mo | 8:55 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Mendenhall's strategy of making early offers is producing two-fold results: getting the talent before the competition and creating momentum that other BYU recruits can't ignore. Scholarships are limited. LDS kids who want to come to BYU but also want to see if other bigtime programs come calling now have to make an early decision. And for the past 3 years now, those early decisions are favoring the Cougars.
It's nice to have Uncle 'Mo on BYU's side. Almost as nice as seeing utah's fans get more and more paranoid as the imbalance keeps shifting towards the Cougars.

Another yawner of an article. Kind of makes you wonder why not one California school recruited this supposed stud???
Bob in line | 9:13 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
The fact that no California schools recruited this kid doesn't bother me. I'll take a great #53 receiver over a #1 Terrell Owens any day. For starters, Mr Owens would probably have problems with BYU's honor code. I think this kid will fit in better. Not to dis Mr Owens but BYU has been voted stone cold sober for how many years now?
Also, let's face it in MWC football, this includes the Utes: PAC 10 schools are recruiting kids that are making the top #20 at receiver. Both Utah and BYU know this. As a credit to our schools, we can do almost as much with 3-star recruits as they do with 5-star recruits. BYU record against the PAC-10 the last few years, Utah's thrashing of UCLA last year.
If BYU and Utah got into a new PAC-12 it would only take a few years but both the PAC-12 championship and the Rose Bowl attendee would be decided in the Holy Wars of Rocky Mountain Utah.
On second thought, the PAC-10 had better keep us out of their conference. They know we'd own it soon enough.

Or, should I say Austin Dynamite!!!
I wonder if Thompson can do nun-chucks and draw awesome Ligers too!

Meh. Nebraska, UNLV, Air Force and BYU recruited this kid. It's not like byu beat out UCLA or USC for him.
Who? | 9:57 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
See you in 3 years
53rd WR Whoopie!!! | 10:55 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Come on man...The 53rd ranked WR got pub for committing with BYU. I love the cougs but please write something noteworthy. BYU does a great job of developing lineman and QB's, stick with that topic.
Northern California recruits are always overrated, they report on them just to get them in the spotlight. Recruit WR from So Cal guys and then maybe you can print a story worth a read.

don't forget | 11:20 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
our boy john beck and harline were both lite this with even fewer stars and im sure all yewt fans can attest to their potential in college football!!
Recruit Me | 12:06 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
When will BYU give me a call? I run a blazing 3.9 40, and I'm 7'3", 270 lbs. with great hands. And as far as conditioning goes, I can run a 4-minute mile on most days.
Calidude | 12:18 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
The California schools signed off as soon as "BYU","LDS" and "Mission Trip" were mentioned

To: Ernest T. Bassssssssssss | 9:00 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
you speak of UNLV. The U should be very familiar with them. I belive they pitched a shut out on Kwitt's team last year.
Anybody who gets blanked by UNLV should be laughed out of the conference.

A good recruit | 9:32 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
This is a pretty good recruit for BYU. It isn't mind blowing that they got him but it is a good pickup. Both these teams are capable of recruiting players like this and both teams do. Until they prove something on the field the stars and hype around them mean nothing.
JAC | 9:42 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Looks like another kid who will work hard, and do the right things on and off the field. He will be BLESSED...
Ernest T. Bass | 10:02 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Yep, and anyone who loses to them TWICE IN A ROW IN PROVO should never play college football again.
As I said, he'll be known for his best quality, as a guy who runs good routes, typical of 90% of the receivers down there.

A few points | 10:03 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
1. Do you all realize how many potential receivers are out there in hs? There are literally thousands of starting hs receivers alone so to be ranked 53 is not bad at all. I mean just what does it take to impress some of you? We still are BYU/Utah not USC - let's keep a little perspective please.
2. Stars are all about the hype. If this kid had not committed yet and a few other schools offered (especially another BCS school or two) he would have gotten an extra star. Let's face it - the ratings are all about hype and that goes away once the kid commits.
3. BYU will always grab a little less talent for someone who totally buys into the BYU culture. This kid (who obviously has talent - see #1) committed after his seminary class for heavens sake - I think he definitely buys into the culture.
4. I would add a star simply for the fact that he dated an older girl in hs. If Collie's sister is now in college and he is going into his senior year you know he is considered a stud among his buddies for that feat alone!
