What better game (sport) is there than college football? The chill of the fresh autumn air, the bands, the rivalries, the fans cheering, and the cheerleaders, all part of the pajentry of college football! I get goosebumps! Kellen knows what I mean and so do most of you! Go Cougars!
Ted | 8:23 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Hey zoobie, keep sniffing the autumn air, because the Utes will kick your butt again, we own you in RES.
Anonymous | 8:25 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
I hope he doesn't miss tackles like in the Vegas
Bowl.

Kellen; You represented your family Well as a missionary, now your representing your family in your new calling, calling the plays for the defence. Your a great young man and a great leader, best to you and your season! Go Cougs!!
Good decision | 8:33 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
He obviously made the best decision by coming to BYU to play safety. Getting to play ANY position at BYU is much better than playing the most highly visible position at any other school in the MWC. Just look what's happened to Alex Smith and Andrew Bogut. Both number one picks in the draft??! Give me a break!!! Everyone can now see what a waste of number one picks those were! Bogut's dad said he'd be the best player in the NBA. Right! He isn't even the best player on his own Aussie team, getting blown out by team USA today. And let's count up all the Super Bowls Smith has helped the 49ers win so far: let's see that would be....ZERO! But at leat he won the Heisman and a National Championship when he was in college. Oh wait he didn't get those either.
Brettski | 9:23 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Is this Blaine Fowler's kid? If it is, his dad is the worst TV announcer ever. BOO MTN!
Anonymous | 10:00 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Did Brettski read the article? Wasn't that in like the second paragraph?

to: Good Decision

I'm a BYU fan, and I think you argument sounds like it comes from a five year old. Seriously if you're out of high school go back, you need it.
To Good Decision | 10:21 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
I am a cougar fan and I hate it when either side rips on the individual kids by name. Root for your team not against the kids who play for the other side! Every BYU fan would have LOVED to have Smith or Bogut on our team. They are quality people, talented at what they do and have given back to the U big time since turning pro. I love the excitement in some of these comments as the season gets closer but I hate seeing the kids personally criticized.
New Mendenhall Tactic? | 10:26 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
I don't remember Mendenhall using the "doghouse" tactic too much before. But he has definitely brought it out a bit this season. Maybe gently calling some players out in public is his way of prodding for that individual perfection. Mendenhall would never rip a player too badly in public and seems more than willing to accept them back when they turn things around. It seemed to light something under Fui and now hopefully it will under Dulan. With Dulan having lost his starting role and this new JC transfer looking very good it seems it is put up time for Ian. I hope he responds well.
re: J dizzle | 10:27 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
I'm also a BYU fan and I think Good Decision has some valid points. Smith and Bogut really haven't lived up to their hype yet, maybe never will. And BYU does have a great program, especially with the way Bronco is molding those young men's lives.
FOF | 10:28 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Keep it up Fowlers! Good luck to Landon and Gavin too!
Wow, the Poison Flows | 10:32 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Sheesh--Ted, Anonymous@8:25, Brettski, Good Decision, J-dizzle, etc. Your mommas never taught ya about "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all?" Don't you all have better things to do than troll the comments? Go do something GOOD for somebody. Enjoy some of that fresh mountain air or something. Stop embarrassing yourselves.

Good luck to Kellen Fowler and the Cougs, regardless!
geezer | 10:51 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Nice article. The Fowler's have done their best for the BYU program. Blaine Fowler does a very decent job for The Mtn. despite what "Brettski" says.

"Hey zoobie, keep sniffing the autumn air, because the Utes will kick your butt again, we own you in RES."

Here are some recent scores from the BYU-Utah game when played in Salt Lake City:

1990 - BYU 45, Utah 22
1992 - BYU 31, Utah 22
1994 - Utah 34, BYU 31
1996 - BYU 37, Utah 17
1998 - BYU 26, Utah 24
2000 - BYU 34, Utah 27
2002 - Utah 13, BYU 6
2004 - Utah 52, BYU 21
2006 - BYU 33, Utah 31

I'd hardly call that owning.
Re: Brettski | 11:06 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Some BYU haters don't even bother reading anything except the headlines of articles; they just jump straight to shooting verbal spitwads.
re:Ted | 11:37 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Sure, you own BYU in RES, but BYU is leasing the endzones...
Hmmm... 2 | 12:57 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Why stop at 1990?

1968 - Utah 30, BYU 21
1970 - Utah 13, BYU 14
1972 - BYU 16, Utah 7
1973 - BYU 46, Utah 22
1976 - BYU 34, Utah 12
1978 - Utah 23, BYU 22
1980 - BYU 56, Utah 6*
1982 - BYU 17, Utah 12
1984 - BYU 24, Utah 14
1986 - BYU 35, Utah 21
1988 - Utah 57, BYU 28
1990 - BYU 45, Utah 22
1992 - BYU 31, Utah 22
1994 - Utah 34, BYU 31
1996 - BYU 37, Utah 17
1998 - BYU 26, Utah 24
2000 - BYU 34, Utah 27
2002 - Utah 13, BYU 6
2004 - Utah 52, BYU 21
2006 - BYU 33, Utah 31

*largest blowout in series history

In the last 20 BYU/Utah games played in RES:

BYU - 13
Utah - 7
(only 2 of Utah's wins were by more than a touchdown)

Average score - BYU 29, Utah 23

Usually close, usually a BYU win.

You must have a secret definition of what it means to "own" BYU in RES.
Ted | 1:43 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Statixtics lie
Best 11 | 2:00 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Fowler will be replaced by Rich after he gets burned on the short pass or slips and falls on run support. Mendenhall needs to put his BEST 11 on the field. Fowler is in beause of name-sake only. Rich is the man for the job.
Stop the Confusion | 2:22 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Don't confuse the boy with facts.

Utah owns BYU in RES.
Exactly right, Ted! | 2:28 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Statixtics lie, but statistics never do...

The Utes might(?) have a better record vs. BYU in Provo, but they certainly don't at RES.
aug. 30 - michigan 63 utah 0 | 2:33 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
hey ted, statistics,(thats how people at byu spell, i dont know who teaches u guys spelling down at utah, such as statixtics. wow) dont lie. i dont think u guys own us at ur stadium. we have beaten u guys more there. we have a better record at ur stadium then at home probably. plus everytime it is close. u can always count on the cougs to come out on top.
Hmmm... | 2:34 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008

They're not facts, they're "statixtics"!

Please BYU and UTAH fan, quit acting like kids. Both of you are sick and disgusting. Why all the hate and loathing. Both school benifit from one another. HOW MANY OF YOU ARE COUGAR CLUB OR CRIMSON CLUB MEMBER. PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOU PUT YOUR MOUTH AND PAY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP. Let the team play it out on the field and quit acting like IDIOTS. BYU AND UTAH is ashamed of all of this stuff. They don't need this crap from either side. GROW UP.
D Bone Sam | 2:40 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
It's amazing how some of these Ute fans can keep talking trash. I mean, I understand that you guys have swept the Cougs in football AND basketball the last two years in a row, but seriously, is that any reason to...oh wait a second. That was us. My bad.

Predictions | 3:07 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
That should read BYU 2008, my bad. But BYU will be awesome in 2009 as well!
BOGUT AND SMITH | 3:26 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Ok smith is struggling you got that but bogut is dominating pretty sure he has averaged a double double about every year! I dont think you watch basketball GOOD DECISION and also alex smith has been in the league three years. I want you to tell me a byu quarterback that has won a superbowl ring that was in the league three years? And also how is john beck doing? Oh wait he has not even won a game!
Predictions II | 3:44 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
BYU 2009 until Bronco retires

National Champs every single year!
Hey, Earth @2:35 | 4:26 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Speaking as a fan from the Pac-10, I fully agree that both BYU and Utah fans are some of the most childish I have ever heard from. Entertaining, but childish. As I've said before, it's like arguing whose ugly sister is the ugliest.

The silliness often reaches new heights of absurdity. Take "aug 30"@2:33, for instance, who is kind enough to give us a lecture on spelling, but he himself (as I assume) seems to think he's sending a text message. Keyboard, man, keyboard. Use it.

What with all this talk of "statixtics," what a bad announcer Blaine Fowler supposedly is (never heard him), and who owns what team at RES, LES, BCS, CBS, whatever--and all this is actually vanilla by BYU/Utah standards--it's hard to believe some of you people are college students or graduates--not to mention churchgoers. But that's a WHOLE different subject, now, isn't it? Then again--are we sure about that?

Just a thought.
re; smith | 4:29 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Actually there was a great qb who wore shades and a headband named jim mcmahon who won the super bowl for the bears, I believe it was his fourth year, so smith better win it this year, oh yeah he will probably lose his starting job and eventually be out of a job.
It's all good! | 5:02 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Long Live Da Smack! isn't this what the Internet is for:
A bunch of pent up matrix dwellers running cybermouths to vent.
Re: anonymous | 6:53 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
If I were a betting man, I would bet you never made a tackle in our life so you wouldn't understand that all defensive players miss tackles! My observations of Kellen is that he misses very, very few. Speaking of missing tackles, this is what I heard on a radio broadcast of last year's BYU/Utah game: "Unga at the 15, the 10, the 5, touch down, Harvey Unga, bouncing off and running over Utah defenders!" That night I saw in on TV replay! I rest my case and Kellen's too!
Utah Stud | 6:55 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
I'm glad to hear Fowler is in at safety. That will make it an easy road to the end zone next November. So much for a perfect season.
Gretzky | 7:02 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
i love the predictions!
re: bogut and smith | 7:25 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Smith was a #1 pick in the draft, that's the whole point of the earlier post. But I can see reading comprehension isn't your forte. Beck was a 2nd rounder and went to a team that was a lot worse than the 49ers. He was supposed to have been able to watch and learn his first year instead of being pushed into the starters role. You might have known that but I don't think you watch football "Bogut and Smith".
fl ute | 8:08 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
UU is the certainly the U/Y underdog this year, but when Red beats blue in Nov, underdog status makes the victory that much sweeter!

Utah by 5
Hmmm... | 8:21 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
The New York Times (their college sports page, anyway) has BYU ranked #10 in the nation.
RE re: bogut and smith | 1:17 p.m. Aug. 21, 2008
Ya beck may have got pushed but i am pretty sure every byu has said beck is the best quarterback in the nfl. i just cant wait tell he crys again on NATIONAL TELEVISION! Do you byu fans remember that haha after we slaughtered you guys poor beck cried on tv!

GO UTES!
Re: Hey, Earth @2:35 | 1:24 p.m. Aug. 21, 2008
Get off your soapbox and keep cheering for your mediocre (at best) PAC 10.
b y u | 12:31 p.m. Aug. 22, 2008
hey that same beck guy u talk about, its not his fault he is on the worst team in the nfl and his line sucks. plus i dont think he was crying when he threw that last second touchdown pass to harline in 06. oh ya i think u utes were crying ha ha. who cares if he cried on t.v. it just shows how much he was sick of losing. but now that has changed
