If there's no whistle... | 9:10 a.m. Sept. 21, 2008
All good coaches, even at pee-wee level, always tell their players if the refs haven't blown their whistles then keep on playing.
Glenn had good plan | 10:01 a.m. Sept. 21, 2008
I have to give Coach Glenn his due. Everyone expected "Thunder & Lightening." The first three plays were passes and they set the tone. BYU had a bit of a cushion expecting the run and Wyoming took advantage of it.

Crum started hot, but cooled off. Probability was against him. His previous play had shown inconsistency so it was only a mater of time.

Johnson's run back was a momentum killer.

Can anyone explain to me what a "traffic cop on steroids" looks like and how that comparison makes any sense?

Thanks, Dick. That paragraph describing the play is the most incoherent bit of writing to hit these pages in a long time. Kudos.

"On Steroids" is commonly used to describe something to the extreme, not necessarily something with a lot of muscles. For example, such-and-such team's offensive scheme is like a spread formation on steroids. Or this new laptop is like an I-Book on steroids.

So the phrase "traffic cop on steroids" refers to the way a traffic cop would wave their arms around to direct traffic, except in a much more emphatic, rapid way.

I think a better description would be "traffic cop on crack or speed". Typically "on steroids" refers to an extreme size. "on crack or speed" would refer to actions. But really it's like tom-a-to tom-o-to.
Regardless.............. | 2:09 p.m. Sept. 21, 2008
............the replay showed that it was a lateral and though Dick makes it out, as if it was an eternity between the ball hitting the ground and being picked up by Johnson....... let's not paint Coach Mendenhall on steroids. I'm sorry Dick but that was a poor choice of words.....which might prove to be disappointing to a few million BYU fans.

I guess he could have written, " ... like Doc Ock waving his tentacles trying to ward off Spider-Man." It still wouldn't have made much sense here.
AZ | 3:34 p.m. Sept. 21, 2008
I'd rather a bunch of Ute fans bashing on BYU fans than the stupid comments I've read here.
Fully Invested | 3:51 p.m. Sept. 21, 2008
I agree with AZ.
Logical Man | 4:16 p.m. Sept. 21, 2008
Regardless, when Harmon referred to Bronco being on steroids it was used as a style of writing. No one actually believed him when he said it. You are one of the self-righteous Cougar fans that give the rest of the BYU fans a bad reputation.

Yes, but what in the world does this article have to do with the baseball scandal? Sheesh, can we stick to the topic here, people?

Go cougs!
Duh | 6:16 p.m. Sept. 21, 2008
It's a commentary, what a bunch of dweebs. Making statements like as if you were all special or something. And for "Regardless", what the heck? I am a BYU fan and I didn't give second thoughts about the Steroid comments. Get a life. I saw the play and was screaming like Bronco was, pick up the ball and run.

Just enjoy the articles, people! Stop the ridiculous, childish nit-picking on the author's style. It's cool that he chose to write about a turning point in the game, an event that rarely occurs in football. That play shows why the Cougars are a good team. Their coach is smart and their team likewise knows how to exploit an opposing team's weaknesses and seizes momentum when it can. All good teams do that. That was the spirit of the article. Those of you who bicker over trivialities missed the moment. I'm just glad Mendenhall and Johnson didn't, if you get my drift. Grow up, folks. You're getting really tiresome. I wish I had the power to banish you from desnews.com and take away your web surfing privileges.

Okay guys, so you didn't like the authors choice of words. I had no problem with it, then again I am not an English major and I have the pay check to prove it.

Lighten up on Dick. He is a good sports writer. Hey, he got you to read this article.
Hollywood | 10:36 p.m. Sept. 21, 2008
Well I understood the analogy without needing an explanation. Geez, not everyone can be a Grantland Rice. Give Dick a break!
Mr. Bob | 8:34 a.m. Sept. 22, 2008
I was at the game and that ball sure did'nt seem like a lateral to me. But they looked it over on replay so it must have been. Sure fooled me.
Dick Pickers-On | 9:48 a.m. Sept. 22, 2008
I don't think there's a creature more pathetic than those persistent critics of Dick Harmon. They punish these blogs every week with their inane "Dick Stinks" comments. Save yourselves some time and the rest of us some aggravation and STOP READING DICK'S ARTICLES IF YOU DON'T LIKE DICK'S WRITING!
Regardless......... | 10:26 a.m. Sept. 22, 2008
it's quite obvious you took me serious and didn't catch anything of the meaning to an incident between Dick Harmon and Roger Reid......a choice of words till stands....and for the rest of you slow on the uptake wway to point out the obvious.
Scoobie | 10:38 a.m. Sept. 22, 2008
I've got to admit the clueless are taking over....Regardless they haven't the foggiest as to where your remarks came from.......geeze back at the old Provo Herald.......Dick, I'll tell Roger Hi for you...............great play even if Johnson had to take the q from from Broncho.
Bronco Bonds | 11:45 a.m. Sept. 22, 2008
Hahaha...I have to admit. When I read Dick's comment "traffic cop on steriods" all I could picture was Barry Bonds in uniform blowing a whistle in the middle of State St :) Didn't really capture the moment for me. Mendenhall...Steriods...thats just funny. Harmon is always good for some entertainment. And he'll say what he needs to for a few comments to his articles. Wow.
Cowboy Stud | 4:47 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
We at Wyoming don't even think of taking steroids. We can do without them and still provide a punishing (very physical) game. But for the fluke lateral pass (I still disagree with the call). Wyoming would have taken it to the lowly Cougars. We definately won the first quarter. No one can dispute that.
CF | 6:35 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
To Cowboy Stud:

Wyoming did NOT win the first quarter. As I recall, the score was 7-0. And if you're refering to offensive statistics, you have to realize that Wyoming had 3 offensive possessions to BYU's 1 at one point in the first quarter.
