He's terrible. He will go sit on the sidelines in the NFL like your last QB.

Please re-check you numbers for BYU against the PAC-10...
These are not the numbers we Ute fans have been given to use in our posts by those up at the Alumni House.
You guys are wrong, I think at last count, including UCLA from last year and this year, BYU is still 0-6 against the Pack Ten.

I don't know if BYU's dream season will come to fruition or not, but I do think Max Hall deserves a lot of praise for his efforts. Last year he about got torn apart, but he never berated his o-line. I enjoy his feisty attitude and toughness. We've already lost some key offensive players, but the team seems to just keep on ticking. I believe a Hall injury would devastate this team.
Hall For Heisman | 8:04 a.m. Sept. 25, 2008
Max Hall is the best quarterback BYU has had since Ty Detmer. His numbers are amazing, and he leads the team to great victories. I bet most people have overlooked this, but BYU has scored at least 40 points in each of its 3 home games so far this year! Why? 2 words: Max Hall.

Fact Finder what are you smoking?
Poor terrible -- Beck beat him twice and he can't get over it. Last I heard the great Brady Quinn is also warming a bench. And let's not even talk abut Alex Smith.

It all ends at TCU. The difference is speed. TCU QB makes quick decisions.

See the O-line. They are truly "Hall's Angels"... the guardian type.
As hard as it is to say for Cougar Fans but... Go Utes to 11-0.

No doubt that is like watching a lawyer go over a cliff in your new car.

Re: Geezer | 8:49 a.m. Sept. 25, 2008
I agree that Max Hall is doing a great job but the simple fact is the reason BYU is putting up so many points is because of the following: (and history overwhelmingly supports the fact that quarterbacks don't achieve without these)
1. Offensive Line - Quarterbacks need the prottection to stay healthy and the time to find receivers.
2. Good Receivers - Joe Montana had a great receiver (Rice) and a great tight end (Clark).
3. Really good defense - Really good defenses stop opponents which then gives the offense the ball and the ability to rack up the numbers and points.
The bottom line: History shows us that these criteria are all needed to produce great quarterbacks. It was true for Bart Starr, Roger Staubach, Joe Montana, Steve Young, etc. Look at the Quarterbacks who excelled in college, got drafted into NFL, on bad teams and what happens? They don't succeed. Why? Read points 1-3 again.

Hey, East Coast Ute, thanks for being polite. That's a breath of fresh air. And I agree. We should all be pulling for every team in the conference every week (unless your team is playing them). I think the BYU-Utah game in November would be even better if they were both 11-0. Go, Cougutefrolcons!
Not likely | 9:57 a.m. Sept. 25, 2008
I would love to see a Utah vs. BYU game with both teams undefeated, but the conference seems to be too strong for that to happen. TCU will probably ruin that party. TCU will unfortunately get smashed this weekend. Here is my prediction in the top of the MWC:
BYU: 7-1 (loss to Utah; hate to admit it though)
TCU: 7-1 (loss to BYU)
Utah:7-2 (loss to bad MWC team and TCU).

Well,
After much thought I have come to the same conclusion. If you are a Ute, Cougars have cooties. If you are a Cougar, Utes have cooties. That is about the intellectual depth of most of this rivalry garbage. I wish that these posts were limited to those who put third grade behind them.
Both teams look pretty good. Both teams have weaknesses and I do not doubt that both teams are perfectly capable of laying an egg against one of the teams in the "lower tier" of the conference. I think BYU is better coached than they have ever been and that could mean magic this season.
If the key players, offensive and defensive, stay healthy and disciplined, I don't think anybody will stop BYU this year. They will go to the BCS and play whatever survives the ACC (I would add the PAC-10 but USC is at least a full level above the rest of the mediocrity that is now the PAC-10) and then we Cougar fans can whine about how we were robbed. Hopefully we will be able to do more than glory in our moment of sunshine (a lot has happened since 2004).

Re: terrible | 10:53 a.m. Sept. 25, 2008
Isn't there a yoot story for you to think about. If you really believe Max Hall is terrible (We know you are just being obnoxious.) then the other MWC QBs go down hill from there. BYU hopes they will have a "terrible" QB every year.
Protection | 11:06 a.m. Sept. 25, 2008
Great article. Max is doing great and the O line is doing a great job of protecting him. The defense is a delight to watch.
Still got have OLB Johnson play a little closer to his guy so he can give him a good strong bump to throw him off his assignment.

"He's terrible. He will go sit on the sidelines in the NFL like your last QB."
Nearly all quarterbacks spend their first year or two or three (or more) on the sidelines. I don't think anyone thinks Max Hall will start for any NFL team as a rookie.

The corollary to Utah and BYU meeting as undefeated teams in November is that TCU has to lose twice in the conference. When thought of this way, it is hard to believe that it will occur.

You forgot point number 4 - Decent running game.
If you don't have a balanced offense (or at least the threat of one), you aren't going to succeed as a QB.

Don'tlisten to "Terrible." Great name for his brain though.
At least the Dolphins kept Beck, suggesting that that Parcells may just hand him the reigns after Chad gets things stabilized.
Wanna talk about Alex "The Wonder Ute" Smith though?
As a resident of Northern CA, I've been listenig to the 49er fans complain about Smith since he was selected. These are the things that are said in the press about Smith: "His hands are small" His decisions are weak and slow," His arm is weak..." and so on. That guy got booed when the team was up!!!
They finally got sick of him, replacing him with a Division II guy who's been tring to walk on an NFL roster for years!!!
I bet you Utes are proud of Alex!!! He fits right up there with your rival's former NFL quarterbacks. Maybe they'll put Alex's bust next to Youngs in Canton Ohio. Or perhaps they can place his Heisman trophy next to Detmer's in the College Hall of Fame?

Alex Smith's Heisman | 5:01 p.m. Sept. 25, 2008
Good one Cali Man.
Alex Smith was an awesome college quarterback, but you do better in the NFL if you're big and strong as well as fast.
Max is a gamer, but it's odd or even whether he'll take many snaps in the NFL. He's bigger than Joe Montana, and there's always the long-lived career of Doug Flutie we can point to and hope Max will be that kind of competitor when his NFL number is called.
Ute fans are funny huh--they say some of the dumbest things. All in a lame attempt to insult.
Trash talking is fun, if it's done intelligently. When it's stupid trash talk it just makes the talker look silly.
It's weird--I'm from Pullman, so I'm used to getting dissed by the purple and gold. But even when Husky fans are at their snootiest lording it over WSU Cougs, they're several orders of magnitude more intelligent (and witty) than these idiotic Ute fans. My heart goes out to them--I can't put my finger on what's wrong there, but all it takes is a mention of BYU and a Ute fan seems to lose 50 or so IQ points. Why is that?

Favorite Husky joke: | 5:04 p.m. Sept. 25, 2008
How do you keep cougars off your property?
A: Put up a goal post.
Doesn't translate well to the MWC, but perfectly apt for the lamentable Pac-10.

You asked...why do Utes lose 50 or so IQ points at the mention of BYU?
Answer: We have to come down to a level BYU fans understand!

The corollary between BYU and Utah both being undefeated in November -- and TCU losing twice in league -- is that BYU and Utah are both better than TCU.
Seems like a pretty simple concept to grasp, friend.

Those 49er fans said the same things about Steve Young until he quieted them by winning a Super Bowl.
Bay Area Fan | 8:14 p.m. Sept. 25, 2008
Well, actually the 49ers fans just wanted Joe Montana back. Steve replaced a legend here for the 49ers. Alex didn't replace anything. In fact, the fans here just wanna win, baby. Anybody who can lead a team to a few victories. In Alex's defense, he hasn't had a lot of good team members to support him. The current owners have run the franchise into the SF Bay mud.
But measuring Alex against the multi-faceted game and passing accuracy of Steve Young, is not a good idea. Not sure what kind of team Alex will be successful with, but it's not the current 49ers team. Of course, Steve had to get to the right team that fit his playing style. And it helped to have a coach that knew how to leverage his talents.
As for Max? Too early to tell. Good accuracy when on this season. In Seattle Max struggled to hit Collie, who was always having to reach back for the passes in the first half. (I was at the game to see it.) But when Max is on, he has great control and accuracy. Similar to Steve. His arm will have to carry him, his legs won't.

RE: terrible | 8:32 p.m. Sept. 25, 2008
What do you call Alex Smith in the NFL?
Not sure | 5:56 a.m. Sept. 26, 2008
I think one of Max Hall's greatest virtues is his toughness. He's taken a beating in some of these games and he just keeps getting back up and throwing. Unfortunately, that won't help his NFL cause. He's undersized for a pocket passer and likely not mobile enough for the speed of NFL defenses. But at this level, he's definitely Heisman material. As long as his supporting cast stays healthy, no reason he can't win out his career.
