Overrated concern. No team is perfect and everyone has rough spots from time to time. This just shows that BYU is a really really good team. They still won by three touchdowns. Credit the defense and credit USU for playing hard and never giving up. There used to be talk that USU shouldn't be on BYU's schedule every year. We might not consider it a rivalry, but you bet they do. For some reason even the best BYU teams of the past have had a difficult time with them.

They should be concerned, they are severely overrated. They will lose.

Not everyday is perfect. Learn from your performance and move on to New Mexico. Everyone has a bad day, so learn from it and move forward. Sometimes you have to win ugly...this was that time. Good luck next week Cougs!

I saw the number 7 team in the nation get outscored 14-10 in three quarters of play to a team with the 88th defense and offense in the nation. That is not the kind of momentum and execution the nation needs to see right now. The media and coaches only read the articles and every one is touting that the Aggies hung with BYU - which is true. Three quarters of play produced two interceptions and no running game. Unga and Fui are not impressing me with their running game. Why doesn't Anae rotate in some of the more agile and quick backs we have on the roster? I was happy for one quarter, disappointed with the rest. We didn't close the deal. If it sounds like I didn't think we won, it's because I think we didn't. Unless we correct things, it was a Pyrrhic Victory - we won the battle but we may have lost the war for a shot at the national championship.

I had a bad feeling about this game all week, but apparently the team is coached well enough and has enough talent (and depth, unusually) to win, anyway.

BYU wins by 20 (technically a blowout at 34-14), and I had a bad taste in my mouth when the game ended. Hmmm.

BYU didn't look like a top ten team in that game. It looked like a worse win than the Washington game (a barely win). Well, expectations can do that for you.

Hall threw for over 300 yards, but two interceptions (one in the end zone--a cardinal sin), and threw into heavy coverage several times. Easy points by our kicker were missed. Harvey ran for a lot yards, but didn't look like himself doing it. Fui had an up-and-down night. Pitta had a tough time, though making some key long catches. However, Collie did well, looking like the highly-rated receiver that he is.

Guess when you have enough talent and are well-coached, you can come into a game uninspired and still win over weak competition. Give Utah State credit, though. They do have some talent--it just hasn't developed yet. But, BYU helped them to develop Friday night.

Let's say a lot of people me included were surprised at how good USU was last night. Maybe BYU is rated higher than it should be.

yada yada yada....just be happy the Cougs won and got out of there with as few injuries as they did. usu should be taken off the cougs' schedule permanently. they are a bunch of cut blocking wannabees.
Stacy | 9:28 a.m. Oct. 4, 2008
Aint' it just like a reporter to focus on the negative---who cares that they are on a winning streak. Who cares that they are #7 in the nation. 'Cougars all at a loss' Wow. That's good reporting....
Madden | 9:29 a.m. Oct. 4, 2008
I get it was a bit sloppy, but when you go up 34-0 and the other team plays it heart out just to try and get some scores in garbage time...this is reason to worry?

Neither BYU nor Utah is getting into the national title game this year no matter what happens. They just have to win out - ugly or pretty - and one of them is in the BCS. End of debate. But have fun arguing anyway, gotta do something to stay entertained for the next month.
Red Man | 9:34 a.m. Oct. 4, 2008
Great job boys. I know you played your best. It will be a great time on November 22. Bronco better get back to the basics, because the Utes are way better than the Aggs. I don't think you can get past TCU. They have good speed and can throw long. Two of your big weaknesses.
What's Collie's Problem? | 9:39 a.m. Oct. 4, 2008
Why is Collie dropping all of those passes? This is the second game he was slumping. Though his brother didn't have the same speed, I can say I never saw him drop easy passes. I blame Collie for starting the downward spiral. He dropped three in a row and gave Utah new life. Some of the younger players were doing a better job of catching the ball. Bronco, take note.
Sluggish too | 9:41 a.m. Oct. 4, 2008
Harvey said they were sluggish. Yeah I'm sluggish too. The difference is I'm almost 40 and football is not a big part of my life.

Is it me or does it look like Harvey needs an oxygen tank after every run? I'm wondering how much conditioning was a part of the bye week...or any week for that matter.

Having played collegiate rugby (the polynesian favorite) in a former life, I know one thing; when you have time off and you get just a little lazy, you end up looking just like the Cougars did on Friday, no matter how talented you are.

I hope the Cougars figure something out before the real games show up. Not eveyone is going to spot you 21 points like the Aggies did.
Joey | 10:44 a.m. Oct. 4, 2008
It was 24-0 after the first quarter. It was 34-0 in the fourth quarter. It wasn't close.
steve smith | 11:20 a.m. Oct. 4, 2008
I saw the # 7 team in nation outscore its oppenent 34-0 in 3 quarters so you can phrase it however you want how. offence was lackluster however utah state looked good against the run first time i have seen byu running game slowed down in long time.
Cole | 12:05 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
BYU is not over-rated, Utah might be a little. That's a tough thing for me to say because I am a big Ute fan. I love to see the MWC do well. The BCS system means that it's impossible, again IMPOSSIBLE, for a non-BCS school to win a national championship. If that were so, in 2004 Utah would have played Auburn for a split national championship.

This is the first time I've posted on a BYU article, but after reading BYU fans continually post on Ute articles I decided to read your posts. I wish all of our posts could be civil and respectful even if we disagree.

Utah's win over OSU was almost just as good for BYU as it was for Utah. Strength of schedule means a lot these days. What if BYU can creep into the top 3? Who knows but it will definitely get some people thinking. We want the country to be watching at RES in November because that will be a bowl game in itself for a spot in BCS bowl (hopefully) Go Utes! Go Cougars!
BYU only a "pretender" | 12:09 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
After playing three straight teams with only mediocre cadres of rotating QBs, we can only imagine what a really good QB like Mizzou's Chase Daniels or OU's Sam Bradford could do against BYU. Either would have a field day against BYU's defense.

On this morning's Game Day show they interviewed Max Hall and asked him about who he would really like to play in a BCS Bowl. He noted that he would prefer to either play Florida or Missouri.

A BYU-Mizzou matchup would be a proverbial shootout since Mizzou has a very less than average defense as well. Think about what Jeremy Maclin would do against BYU's secondary. Can you say "career" game?

Only afraid that BYU will be this year's Hawaii if they are fortunate enough to run the table and have to go up against a Big XII team. Less worried if they end up facing someone like LSU or Georgia with they mediocre at best offenses.

Of course, it may all be moot since they still have to face TCU and Utah. Anything less than their "A" game against Utah will be a disaster.
Re: Stacy | 1:05 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
I think the reporter was only pointing out that even BYU was feeling pretty negative after the win. There is no way the Cougars could have felt good about the way they played against Utah State. I guess you think the reporter should have painted a picture more rosy than what it really was? BYU was disappointed in how they played, and they should have been.
Dear Utah Football Team... | 1:59 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
If you do a silly little dance before each game and "live right", you too can be a top ten team.I know it's true because Bronco says so.

P.S. It would also really help if you would "dumb down" your schedule a bit like ours. The teams we have played are a combined 6-16. And NEVER EVER play a Top 25 team. EVER!

Sincerly

To all you cougar supporters than feel it necessary to continue to put down a gutsy and obviously over-matched Utah State football team, go ahead. Do whatever it takes to try to make sense out of what you deem a "disappointing" 34-14 victory.

I am a USU alum and season football and basketball ticket holder (have been for a decade). We didn't think we could win last night (none of us is that delusional). We did however, hope to see progress and grit and something to bolster our continued support of a struggling football program. I know I came away from that game having seen something I hadn't in a while from USU--heart. For now, I'll hang my hat on that and hope we can continue to improve and compete in the WAC. USU is not the 118th or whatever best football team in the country, so hold your heads a little higher Y. We'll probably end up in the middle of the WAC this year, so consider this a road game victory at CSU, Wyoming, or SDSU.

Stop running your mouth or it will get popped come Nov. 22
The issue | 2:29 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
So is it that BYU is overrated, or the Utah State played better than usual and is trying to turn a corner? I hope it's a bit of both. I'd like to see Utah State improve and put up a good showing in the WAC. I'd also like to see BYU get murdered by Utah in November. So here's hoping.
The big picture though is it's kinda sad that a pretty comfortable win is considered bad for BYU and a loss like this is considered a good sign for Utah State.
It's like the way everyone was impressed by Sarah Palin in the debates because she managed to form coherent sentences and not drool or cry.
cougar boy | 3:15 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
i have never seen so man people disapointed in a 34 14 win, and Byu is anything but overrated beating two pac 10 teams one by 59 points is not overrated.
Misrepresentation | 3:25 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
This game could perhaps be the most misunderstood game with wrong conclusions I've ever witnessed in my life. Utah State was NEVER in the game. When you're down 24-0 before the 1st quarter ends, that is dominance. When you're down 34-0 going into the 4th quarter against a team that hadn't given up a point in ELEVEN quarters, that is dominance.

It is true, the special teams was sloppy, Hall had some ill-advised passes, Collie dropped a few, the running game never really got going, the defense collapsed... in the 4th quarter. I'm sorry folks. I half-expected the Aggie fans to rush the field...after a 34-14 loss. Chanting "over-rated" when you're down 34-14? Wow. That's what you chant when you're there's a change you'll win. That just shows you how dismal Utah State's football program has become.

This game was NEVER in doubt. To make a basketball comparison, I'd say it's like team A was beating team B by over 30 points entering the 4th quarter, and team B hits a barrage of three's to bring it within...15. 15 point game is still a blowout.

Nevertheless, BYU still should've played much better. Horrible reffing in 4th quarter, though.
Reality check... | 3:54 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
OK... I think its time for a reality check. The score was 34-0 in the fourth quarter. Two last minute touchdowns hardly indicate that BYU is undeserving of their hard earned national ranking. USU came out in the final quarter and made a last ditch effort to save some dignity and they did a great job. BYU is #7 from 3 years of hard work and consistency.

Utah fans are so out of it that they forget that every game is different. The only thing they care about is bashing BYU. Every team that plays a top 10 team is out to get you even more, just to prove to themselves and their fans that they are something. The only game that counts is the game that is played.

BYU still won by nearly 3 touchdowns. A bit different than pulling off the win with 2 seconds to play. It can be hard to stay motivated when you are winning by 24 before the 1st quarter is over. Hopefully both Utah and BYU undefeated when they go at it on Nov 22nd. The higher Utah is ranked the better it will look when BYU beats them.

Go Cougs!!!
klwils | 4:27 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
You wanna see drooling and crying, cash in your student ticket, and stagger over to try and find your seat in the mess, oh, sorry, muss section on NOV 22
BYU lost | 5:03 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
their discipline. They couldn't keep the mental edge in this game. USU put up a great fight and started looking pretty decent on their 4th quarter scoring drives. They have heart left, so they can be dangerous.

BYU had better get their heads back into the game or they will get smoked by TCU. They've got it, but they seemed to be letting it go towards the end of the game. Bronco will certainly be addressing that issue this coming week.

I won't bother adding an off-topic political rant to the end of my post, however.
Reality Check | 5:12 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
Remember who BYU was playing last night. Ranked just above Idaho, the worst team in the country. Don't think we should be making excuses for a very poor performance by the Cougars.
No Cause for Concern | 9:27 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
BYU didn't even show up for this game, yet they still led 34-0 going into the third quarter. Just imagine what this team would've done if the players hadn't extended the bye week into last night!
az coug | 9:37 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
Hey BYU....

You'd better stop strutting around.

You lose...you are nothing!

BCS glory only comes to non bcs teams if they are perfect.

You're not good enough to relax. You are not good enough to not give everything...and that may not be enough.

BYU must give maximum effort for the nexy 50 DAYS.

50 DAYS OF MAXIMUM EFFORT

You cannot afford to make any mistakes...any turn overs, any drops, any blown coverage, any mental errors.....you have no room for weak efforts like last night.

A BCS appearance will lift BYU's recruiting, reputation, and entire atletic program for a decade!

Do'nt BLOW IT!
Idahoan | 9:40 p.m. Oct. 4, 2008
What I don't understand is that so much is made about BYU coming off a bye. Utah State did also.

What was with the 100+ yards in penalties? Ouch.
Overrated? | 7:04 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Who is Utah State to call the Cougars Overrated? Name 10 teams that have Proven they are better than the cougars! They own the nation's longest winning streak. They haven't lost a conference game in over 2 years! They have beaten up on the Pac-10 for the past 2 years!
Again, Utah State had their butts kicked. The score was 34-0 at the beginning of the 4th quarter!
I'm still at Utah State fan, but their chants of Overrated were ridiculous! I can't recall the last time I saw a team lose so badly and still chant Overrated....oh yeah, it was in high school.
Re: Eric from Mesa | 7:11 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
You may have seen the #8 team in the nation get outscored 14-10 through 3 quarters, but I saw them outscore a befuddled Utah State team 34-0 through 3 quarters.

I guess that some folks will go to any length to find a flaw. It's also apparent from all the media that the 4th quarter matters more than the final score!

Just as Utah State was a few plays away from scoring more points, BYU was a few dropped passes away from a 64-0 blowout.

Good luck to Utah State in the WAC--I hope they do well!
Roger from Colorado | 5:33 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
State fan you had home field advantage, There is nothing else to say. What ever the outcome, a win is still a win and the Quest is still alive for a BCS bid for BYU. I will take 5-0 any day.
Outscored in 3 quarters? | 11:35 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Quit saying that BYU was outscored in 3 quarters. That statistic is very misleading as Utah State only scored in the last quarter of the game. If you want to manipulate the stats, you can also say that BYU shut Utah State out in the first 3/4 of the game. Or that BYU outscored Utah State in all but the last quarter of the game. Utah State didn't do jack squat in quarters 1-3, so the only accurate thing you can say is that they scored in the last quarter, period.

Could you be more uneducated? Did you also get a degree from the U?

The Haka, is a Maori (New Zealand) war dance. Do a google search on the All Blacks rugby team if you need more info.

Re Pretender: If your logic holds true, then why did Alabama have such a hard time against Kentucky. What about Florida losing to Ole Miss at home. Are they pretenders as well? They certainly played to the level of their competition.

Please don't come back with the same ole SOS argument either. Lets look at the teams that the U has beaten:
UNLV = Lost to Nevada
Utah State = Nuf Said
Weber State = You're kidding right?
Michigan = Got thumped at home by a big 10 powerhouse Illinois

Your SOS is nothing today...same as BYU. Give it 6 weeks and then lets see the SOS cause we all play the same teams from here on out.
