Tom Brokaw won. Twice he chastised Obama for going over the time limit, but never complained about McCain directly. Guess we know who Tom is voting for.
The one thing I remember was Obama calling for the oil companies to return the 68 million acres of leases they were sitting on if they did not put them into production. Why do they want more? Are they stockpiling them?

another bailout? | 5:06 a.m. Oct. 8, 2008
"It's my proposal. It's not Sen. Obama's proposal, it's not President Bush's proposal,"~~
The additional 300 billion dollar home owner bailout on top of the 700 billion dollar Wall Street bailout will not get the votes McCain needs to win this election.
I don't like Obama but I better get used to the phrase President Obama.
Best of luck with 4 years of this mess.
/could it be that McCain doesn't want the job?

Someone, please, let obama know that the real reason for Americas, economical meltdown. Was caused by the corruption of our government, BANKING COMMISSION. Headed by the democrat, CHRIS DODD. Who by the way, received the most money, from Fanny Mae amd Freddi Mac. My hope would be that our FBI, will use our finest agents to bring these men to justice. Then and only then can JUSTICE BE SERVED!!! A word to the wise is sufficient.

Obama is the man! He took McCain to the cleaners. We need fresh ideas in Washington, and Obama has the leadership, judgement, wisdom, and knowledge to lead us to new heights. Go Obama!
SteveD | 6:21 a.m. Oct. 8, 2008
Neither won this debate, It wasn't really much of a debate, both dodged questions and both pointed fingers. Either man will be insignificant. We have atleast another 4 years of crappy leadership no matter who wins.
Observer | 6:22 a.m. Oct. 8, 2008
McCain doesn't come across well at all. He gives the impression, and it's probably an accurate impression, that all he cares about is winning the election. Oh, he tries to make it look like he cares about the average American, but it isn't fooling the voters. What John McCain cares about is John McCain. The fat lady sang after that debate.
McBush | 6:33 a.m. Oct. 8, 2008
McCain is desperately promising anything to get elected. He is attacking Obama like he did Romney. The scariest thing is his shoot from the hip style with his new proposal to bail out bad mortgages, bring Palin on the ticket, go into Iraq rather than after Bin Laden, etc.
I for one have had enough swift boating and shooting from the hip in the white house. McCain is just an older version of Bush. I am ready for a steady hand, a thoughtful mind and a leader who is loyal to his wife.
The decision this year is clear. Go Barak Obama

STOP SHORT SALES ! | 6:41 a.m. Oct. 8, 2008
Until we stop the Short Sales then we are not protecting the banks or the economy.
Reality: I am a Realtor and this IS what's happening today.
People are now taking advantage of the banks by selling their homes on a "Short Sale" to their friend. The homes sells for half it's value and a few months later they buy the home back from their friend for half the price they were obligated to originally.
If the government wants to protect the banks AND the people then they will disallow short sales. Protecting the people from foreclosure only hurts the bank and enables the people to have more power in a short sale. Some Realtors see this as an opportunity to make a lot of money. Convince the people to do a short sale. They never move out, there is no For Sale sign in their yard and they get the home for half price. This is nothing but dishonest.... but the banks allow it. Why?
If a bank allows a short sale then the bank should resell the home. The homeowner should move out. This would protect the bank and the economy. Oh wait, that would be a foreclosure.

I don't care how bad people think McCain is. Why isn't anyone paying attention to the terrorist ties that Obama has. How he removed the flag from his airplane and replaced it with a symbol. Also, why doesn't he put his hand over his heart when the flag is being presented.
Scary if you ask me. He's CLEARLY NOT THE MAN for the White House.

Trillions of dollars lost? This is silly. When are we going to get back to the issues that matter, gay marriage, guns, and maybe some creationism?
Maybe the people are waking up, and seeing past all the nonsense on AM radio. Go Obama.

I was surprised to know that McCain has known all along how to fix the Social Security mess.
John, What have you been doing the last 26 years if you know how to fix it and it is easy to do?!
And all we have to do is appoint a committee and they will fix Medicare also!
The old fool has no real answers- just delusional fantasies. Oh, I almost forgot, and he's a maverik.

It's just politics. There is no leadership from either of these men. Obama's push for change is just more of the same old stuff, the same games, meaningless rhetoric. As for McCain, please, he doesn't have a clue.

"Worst economic crisis" | 7:30 a.m. Oct. 8, 2008
Note to the APO (Associated Press, Obama): This is not the "worst economic crisis in 80 years" nor is it anywhere close to it. It's not surprising the liberals at the AP would forget the "stagflation" of the Carter years, where both the interest and inflation rates were twice as high as they are today.

This was a very lame debate filled with lame questions. Is there some sort of agreement where no one is every allowed to ask about issues like gun control or illegal immigration? I find it fascinating that these issues don't exist unless you listen to Spanish-speaking media.

When the party against nation building becomes the party for nation building,
when the party of peace through strength becomes the the party of preemptive war,
when the party of fiscal responsibility becomes the party of massive debt,
when the party of free markets becomes the party of socialism,
when the party of small government becomes the party of big government,
when the party of individual liberty becomes the party of surveillance,
and when the party of religious liberty becomes the party of religious pandering,
then that party deserves to lose.

You said you'd buy up all the bad paper on homes, and help them make their payments. We bought a home we could afford on our budget. It's too small for us now. So, if we go out, buy a BIGGER and more OPULANT home, you'll help me make that Payment, Sen. MCCain?
Thanks! I'll go looking tonight. I fancy Sandy/Draper up on the hills, and not the flatland I live in now.

Mitt Romney | 7:51 a.m. Oct. 8, 2008
If not for all the religious bigots across this country we could have Mitt Romney ready to take over the presidency and be poised to fix the country's economy the way he bailed the olympics out. But, as it is you'll get 4 more years of nothing different...no matter which of these elite fools you elect.
Anybody who thinks either of these 2 excuse makers "won" that debate last night has really got a problem with clouded vision. Call it "Keith Olbermann" or "Shawn Hanity" disease...

I didn't hear a mention last night of any help for those who have already lost their homes because of stupid financial decisions, only help for those about to lose their homes because of stupid financial decisions.
You hear a lot of libs blaming 100% George Bush and Republicans for the mortgage financial crisis. I'd be interested to know the number of liberal democrats who made stupid financial decisions and bought a home they couldn't afford. The conservatives don't have the corner on this stupidity market. I think you'd find the room equally full of Democrats.
Here's a toast to continued stupidity because you're not going to see any relief from either of these idiots we have to choose from.

How come? | 7:58 a.m. Oct. 8, 2008
As I watched the debate, I couldn't help but notice that while Sen. Obama was presenting his side to the issues, Sen. McCain could be seen wandering around in the background, walking back and forth for whatever reason. Talk about a lack of social etiquette! Or was it because he couldn't remember where he last left his chair? Go figure.

Whomever wins this election is really immaterial. It's the congress that can't seem to get it right and that's where the focus needs to be.

What debate did you watch last night? You evidently missed the actual debate and just watched Keith Olbermann's personal recap of it afterwards. No wonder he got demoted at MSNBC! You would make a good writer for his personal opinion show though...until it gets cancelled, which has to be very soon!

I thought I had found the pinnacle of stupidity lately - the idiotic and usually incoherent bickering between BYU fans and Utah fans in the commenting sections of seemingly every article on either of the schools' football teams.
Pathetically, I realized that was not the case last nighht; McCain and Obama made the mindless drivel posted here look like cool headed scholarly discussion.
Quit making stupid and inaccurate statements about one another, quit citing quotes by the other person totally out of context, quit acting like you are in Jr High again, show some integrity by staying within the time limits you agreed to abide by for the debate, and last but not least - try answering the questions you are asked rather than mindlessly reciting the hateful rhetoric your ivy-league-educated moron advisers made you rehearse for hours before hand. We're not stupid, quit treating us like we are.
I'd be willing to vote for either candidate if they could show the ability to lead rather than the ability to wallow in the muck.

John McCain sadly appeared as an old man (Think Tim Conway's old man character with the little steps) who kept forgetting who he was talking to.
He must have thought he was addressing a GOP rally or something or was on The Rush Limbaugh Show where one can pull abrasive, character assasinations.
The race is offically over. Even with Palin calling Obama a terrorist is not going to work with mainstream America.

"sickening" either you did not watch the debate last night or you have very selective hearing, I would suggest going back and reding the transcriot from last night, both men talked about policy plans to address "issues". they could have both spent less time on attacks but they did talk about policy to address "issues." I am thinking maybe Obama has just not addressed your pet "issue" or maybe you just don't like the answers Obama gives.
McDole | 8:41 a.m. Oct. 8, 2008
McCain is the Bob Dole of 2008, and to be honest I'm not all that sad about it. As I watched the debate last night I was cringing at every response he made. He looked old and out of touch. His ideas were even worse as if buying up home loans for Americans were some sort of conservative great new idea. Don't try to out spend the liberals, it just doesn't work.
I should be scared that Obama is going to win, but I'm not really. The Republican's sold us all down the river messing up our economy with the finanial collapse. (I don't believe all my favorite talk radio hosts that it was all Barney Frank and Chris Dodd, look who had the majority in congress at the time, and those Republican's did nothing as far as oversight!) We don't have a conservative party any more, so what does it hurt to let the liberals take over for a while. I hate to say it, but things were better when Clinton was president and the conservatives were in congress. At least then you had the two parties trying to keep each other honest.

The real cure for our sickness as a nation is not really a new president, but a new congress. Our congress is full of long term senators and representatives who seek power and attention for themselves and fail to do what is best for America. It's time to focus on limiting the terms of congress.

to Stop Short: I made a small killing short selling Marriott (NYSE:MAR) after I heard Bill Marriott's Q2 view of "continued strong growth under the president's leadership" = Delusion. Nothing personal Brother Bill but when MAR was $46 I shorted $23, yesterday the stock hit $19, muchas gracias. Why should I be punished for not living in Bush la-la land?
to Where's Mitt: Right on. Choosing Palin over biz whiz Mitt Romney was a spectacularly stupid decision that shows McCain does not get it at all, at best, or is kowtowing to whacko evangelicos at worst, or both.
I predict that the psychological benefit of an Obama victory, change for change's sake, will turn the tide of market mood. And I'm not alone: Obama trading at 84 on Intrade, means market believes only 26% chance of McCain victory.

Blame Yourself | 9:19 a.m. Oct. 8, 2008
Both candidates can point fingers all they want about who is responsible for the financial mess. Truth is, the only people to we can blame are ourselves, the consumers. When did it suddenly become acceptable for a middle class family to live like rock stars? I'm sorry if you mistakenly purchased a home that was way out of your league, but I didn't. And now that I am in the position to afford a little more house, I will appreciate very much the huge savings I'm about to get from your foreclosure. I'm no expert, but I believe that might be an example of the market forces Republicans have been so crazy about for the last couple of decades.

Why does his willingness, with out preconditions, to meet with countries that hate us, not cause you to dump him?
Is your hate of our country and of your current president so deep that you'll vote for a left wing radical?

McCain a maverick? | 9:35 a.m. Oct. 8, 2008
Honestly, every time he opens his mouth he sounds more and more like a mainstream Democrat -- what's another $300B for a housing bailout? I hope no one out there is buying this limp pre-election rhetoric designed to buy your vote. If he's the "maverick of the Senate," then Barack Obama is a decorated war hero.

God help us all if either becomes president!
Obama KNOWINGLY associates with domestic terrorists. He wants to raise taxes by rolling back the tax cuts enacted in the last 8 years. He wants to nationalize health care (and you think the financial crisis is a mess?). He is horribly inexperienced in the national and world scene. World politicians and enemy states (yes we have them) will make the US look like a bunch of dunces.
McCain eviscerated the 1st Amendment provision of free speech. He wants to screw up the insurance racket even more (hint for McCain: put the consumer in charge, not the insurance companies).
Both are fascists: they want a larger role of government in our lives and that is the hallmark of fascism -- a large controlling central government.
We as a society deserve the government we get.

To Anonymous @9:32 a.m.: There are other candidates in the Presidential race, but the media refuses to give them any chance to debate with these two jokers. There are two independant party candidates that really resonate with me. They are: Charles Baldwin of the Constitution Party and Ralph Nader of the Beacon of Light Party. Either one of these two men would be a much better choice for President, because they believe in the Constitution and they also have a grasp of the economy sitution and have very viable solutions to fix it. The only reason that I know anything about these two men is because my state sent me a voter's guide in the mail and I have read their messages. If you really want to help America, do not vote for either McCain or Obama.

Listen McCain people, if you want to go down the "character" road of who knows more evil, corrupt dangerous people, just know you are going to end up looking like fools.
Well, actually, that's already happened.

Brother Chuck Schroeder | 10:53 a.m. Oct. 8, 2008
The U.S. Federal Reserve and other major central banks moved in concert Wednesday to slash key interest rates as part of an ongoing effort to quell financial turmoil that has threatened to flatten the international economy. In moves announced simultaneously before the opening of U.S. markets, the Fed cut its key lending rate by half a percentage point, to 1.5%. The European Central Bank trimmed its key rate to 3.75% from 4.25%, and the Bank of England cut its benchmark rate to 4.5% from 5%. The Bank of Japan sat out the move but issued a statement backing the action. The Bank of Canada, the Swiss National Bank and the Swedish Riksbank cut rates as well. The move was hailed by economists, but did little to provide lasting support for tumbling equity markets. European indexes rebounded strongly but soon returned to the downside. U.S. stock index futures spiked higher, but then dove back into negative territory. Incoming economic data suggest that the pace of economic activity has slowed markedly in recent months. Moreover, the intensification of financial market turmoil is likely to exert additional restraint on spending.
