I still associate the temples and the Mormon faith with fairy tales.

and experience. In the educational vocabulary this is often termed "one's schema". In other words one's background...
Joseph Smith often referred to "Truth" as knowledge
of things AS THEY ARE as they HAVE BEEN and AS THEY ARE TO COME.
Hope you can find answers. You just might be dismissing life's greatest "truths" by over-simplification...
The "experiment" of prayer (Communicating with the Creator Himself) might help if the "experiment" is approached with "An Open Mind".
