When you are a public and/or elected official, you should be guided by the principal of avoiding even the slightest appearance of impropriety. Then you don't end up in messes like this. Hughes should have known better than to discuss a vote with money. If he didn't, just shows that Leadership has not done its job training legislators with regards to propriety.

It is hard to take any ethics accusation seriously if it comes as an "October Surprise," shortly before an election. I would like the accusers to publicly explain why, if their charges are true, they chose to wait to make the accusations. It is clear that the accusers are more interested in winning an election than raising the level of ethics in the Utah legislature.

While the incident apparently took place long ago, the Democratic legislators obtaining evidence of these allegations is very recent. Democratic legislators acted with all deliberate speed and were not influenced by the timing of elections. The complainants have little or nothing to gain electorally.

Bye Hughes... good riddens | 4:08 p.m. Oct. 10, 2008
It shouldn't matter how long ago this supposedly happened. If he did something illegal or wrong he should pay the price. Everything that I have read and heard seem to support that Hughes is probably guilty and just trying to spin his way out of this by distracting everyone from the facts. Distractions like... this is only happening because it is an election year. Bah...
If this happened I would like to see Hughes lose his position and serve some time as a criminal.

We want better reporting | 5:03 p.m. Oct. 10, 2008
It's hard to take the news story seriously when it's based so heavily on the version presented by Hughes' attorney. Of course the others are sworn to secrecy, but the reporter should make sure that this is clear to readers. Otherwise, it doesn't approach unbiased reporting.

Is this the same Niel Hansen who's brother shot himself in the foot while teaching a conceal carry class, and then exclaimed "I've been hit!"???

It's really to bad that we can't hear the testimony from the "witnesses." The lawyer said that she did not use the words "bribe" or "illegal" in her testimony. I wonder what words she di use?

You are naive to the max if you think this is not election year politics. If this event happened 2 years ago why wasn't it brought up then. Phil Reisen is as big a snake in the grass as Hughes. I would not buy a sofa from this sneaky snake. I wish the legislature both local and national would spend more time on the people's business and less time on trying to one up each other and would just be honest. Oh well! I'm just to naive.
What a joke... | 6:15 p.m. Oct. 10, 2008
As if the lobbyist involved are going to tell the truth. This is a flawed system...if Draper voters don't throw Hughes out then they deserve what they get...a crooked bully. Ask his mission companions. The guy is as dishonest as they come and the lobbyists are not going to tell the truth if it was written on a quecard.
No Justice | 7:29 p.m. Oct. 10, 2008
Who's drafting the new ethics reform bill that's coming up during the next legislative session? I think this entire incident has showed how flawed the current system is. Both sides are angry with how the committee is proceeding.
How can justice ever be served under the current rules for ethics enforcement?

Really?? | 10:16 p.m. Oct. 10, 2008
This entire hearing is a joke. Are voters really so stupid that a last-minute accusation during a political campaign will sway their vote? My answer is, my god I hope not.
A travesty of the system is occurring. What we REALLY need is a deadline for these types of charges....for instance, if you have a charge to file against an opposing parties nominee, it better be filed more than 6 days before voter registration ends or one week before early voting begins.
As Alanis Morissette once said... "Isn't Ironic, Dontcha Think?"

how stupid are utah'n | 2:24 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
People of Utah, I always thought and will always think that the whole reason to support a candidate is because he or she has integrity but you all are throwing that out the window for politics.
